Seeing in black and white
Black and white conversions are radical transformations of images. They”re about reestablishing the tonal foundations of an image. That’’s quite different than dodging and burning, or lightening and darkening locally, which is a matter of accentuating existing tonal relationships.

Conversion methods
There are almost a dozen ways to convert an image from color to black and white; and you can probably find at least one expert to support each way as the best conversion method. The bottom line is that most conversion methods work reasonably well. The method that works best for you depends on your particular workflow and the tools that you”re comfortable with. The following method isn”t necessarily the best and it isn”t the fastest—it generates a larger file—but it offers you the most control and flexibility.
Creating layers from channels offers you more control than any other conversion method. It also offers you the flexibility of being able to change any aspect of the conversion at any time in the future. Here’’s how you do it: copy the individual channels of a color image, and then paste them into the same document as the original color image. Next, rename the layers accordingly. Then, reduce the opacity of the layers to achieve the result that you want. If you want a neutral image and don”t want the color of the Background layer to show through, keep the opacity of the layer directly above the color Background layer at 100%.

Photoshop Tutorial - Basic Introduction

Computers recognized many different color formats. Some common choices include:
RGB color — lists a value between 0 and 255 for each of the Red, Green, Blue components of a color. (0, 0, 0), the absence of color, is completely black. (255, 255, 255), the presence of all colors, is completely white. Most Photoshop artists work in RGB.
CMYK color —lists a percentage of each of the colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, blacK). CMYK can best be thought of as the “color printer cartridge colors.” Some graphics designers choose to convert their work (after it has been done in RGB) to CMYK so that they have a better sense of how it’’s going to look after it is printed.

Grayscale —this is exactly what it sounds like. It’’s a color mode that operates entirely in black and white. Usually in order to convert an image to grayscale, you will first need to flatten it. (More about this later)
Bitmap —Only allows for black and white dots (pixels); I wouldn”t recommend using this in most cases
Lab color — Represents color with 3 components: (Lightness, color value from red to green, color value from blue to yellow). This is another non-standard color channel.

4.1 Using the Rubber Stamp Tool
To use the rubber stamp tool, first select a “brush” size that looks appropriate for the error that you”re correcting. The rubber stamp is a cloning tool, and you don”t want your cloning area to be too large.
Next, select the area that you wish to clone by holding down the option key while you click the mouse over that area.

Photoshop Painting Techniques: Hair and Fur

If you haven”t already, you will at some point in your design career be forced to composite hair or fur into a project. The specific reason isn”t important. But how are you going to do it? Use a plugin? Not any of the ones I”ve seen. Copy and paste hair from another image? Too much of a pain, what with the complex masking and color matching. So what will you do, paint the hair follicle by follicle? Absolutely. But it isn”t anywhere near as time-consuming as it sounds. With the tools available in the Photoshop 7 Paint Engine, you can generate hair and fur with as much detail as you like in almost no time at all.

Creating your brush tip and setting dynamics
If you”re not familiar at all with Photoshop 7′’s Paint Engine, this tutorial is going to give you a little insight that will make you wonder how you ever got along without it. If you don”t want to create this brush yourself, you can wait until I post my collection of hair and fur brushes next week. But for the more adventurous among you, here’’s how you do it. To begin with this particular example, we first need to create a new brush tip shape. Create a new document with a transparent background. Select a dark gray color swatch, and then switch to the Brush tool and select one of the preset brushes–the “Hard Round 3 Pixels” brush in this case. Draw some squiggly lines that overlap. Make sure you make at least one of the lines fairly long, and be sure to make them curly. If you have a pressure-sensitive tablet, vary the stroke width by easing off the pen. Getting this brush tip shape just right may tale a little time, but you will get there with just a few tries. Here’’s the squiggle I”ve drawn for this example, and it’’s the only one I”ve used in creating the sample image to the right.

To introduce you to some creative techniques available in Photoshop that can help turn your ordinary digital photos into something extra-ordinary. After viewing the demonstrations, hopefully you will be inspired to revisit digital photos you”ve taken in the past to create dazzling digitally manipulated images of your own.

Monotone Color Tint
1. Open a file (*For PDI open “johnny.jpg”)
2. Verify your image is in RGB mode. From the Menu Bar choose Image > Mode > RGB. You need to be in this mode to work with layers. Some other modes don”t support layers.
3. Make a copy to edit. From the Menu Bar choose Image > Duplicate. Accept or change the name of the duplicate. Click OK. The duplicate image will open. Work on this copy and minimize or close the original image.
4. Duplicate your background layer by dragging its layer in the Layers palette to the “Create a new layer” icon located at the bottom of the Layers palette.
5. Verify your “background copy” layer is targeted (highlighted) in the Layers palette.
6. Add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer by clicking on the “Create new fill or adjustment layer” icon located at the bottom of the Layers palette then choose “Hue/Saturation”. See Figure A.
7. Click the colorize box and slide the Hue slider to change the color hue to whatever hue (color) you prefer. See Figure B.
8. Adjust the Saturation if desired. Moving the Saturation slider to the left means less color saturation, and to the right means more vibrant color saturation. Click OK when done.
9. Save your file with a .psd extension. (*for PDI use “johnny.psd” by selecting “Photoshop *.PSD” from the “format” drop down arrow. Leave the file open for the next technique.)

magic wand & ”grow”
If the area of your image is selectable as one continuous region, as the sky in the rock photo below, you will be able to use the magic wand tool to create your selection. Select the magic wand tool in the tool bar and click in the sky area of your image to create the first selection. The tolerance is set by default to 32, the higher the value - the more colours will be included. Most professionals though advise to keep the tolerance low - and add to the selection rather than putting up the tolerance value.

Photoshop Technique - How to Create a Linocut Effect

A linocut effect uses the details in an image to create a black and white engraving of the image.

The linocut effect can be used on various subjects, but especially comes in handy when the original source is of low quality. If you want color from the original subject image to appear in the linocut effect image, make a layer copy of the subject image and apply the linocut effects to the layer copy. Steps 7 through 9 will explain how to apply the color layer and the hue saturation as shown above.

To learn how to achieve the desired effects, I would suggest repeating this process on the same image several times, experimenting with the amounts for the radius (see below) and the threshold. Menu steps are enclosed in <> and highlighted in red.

Photoshop Technique: Increasing Image Resolution To Large Prints

Since Adobe Photoshop 7 was released, there have been many affordable technological innovations that make it easier for you to get quality prints made in sizes you wnt without worrying about image degradation due to interpolation (a mathematical process to estimate pixel values). If you want quality large prints, there are several ways to get them including:

- Shoot with a large megapixel camera. Capturing the resolution you need to begin with is always superior to any other approach that requires interpolation. As 6-, 8-, 11- and 14-megapixel cameras become more common and affordable, the whole issue of increasing the image size to gain sufficient resolution becomes less of an issue unless you have plans for very large prints.
- Use the “new and improved” interpolation algorithms in Adobe Photoshop CD to get excellent results. Adobe Photoshop CS’s algorithms include Bicubic Smoother, Nearest Neighbor, Bilinear, Bicubic (new and improved since Adobe Photoshop 7), and Bicubic Sharper.
- Use software specifically designed for increasing image resolution. Camera RAW found in Adobe Photoshop CS allows you to increase image size as does Phase One’s Capture One DSLR. There are also plug-in such as LizardTech’s Genuine Fractals Print Pro, Extensis’s pxl SmartScale, and S-Spline from Shortcut Software to name just three. Other software products including image viewers and editors contain interpolation algorithms that are often touted as being superior (but may or may not be) to the original Bicubic found in earlier version of Photoshop. These programs include Qimage Pro and IrfanView 32, and Photo Cleaner.

Tweaking the Windows 7 Registry

When you change the desktop background using Control Panel’’s Personalization window, the next time you start your computer, how does Windows 7 know which image or color you selected? If you change your video display driver, how does Windows 7 know to use that driver at startup and not the original driver loaded during setup? In other words, how does Windows 7 remember the various settings and options either that you”ve selected yourself or that are appropriate for your system?

All the direct work you do with the Registry happens inside the reasonably friendly confines of a program called the Registry Editor, which enables you to view, modify, add, and delete Registry settings. It also has a search feature to help you find settings and export and import features that enable you to save settings to and from a text file. To launch the Registry Editor, select Start, type regedit into the Search box, and then press Enter. When the User Account Control dialog box shows up, enter your credentials to continue.
Figure 12.1 shows the Registry Editor window that appears. (Note that your Registry Editor window might look different if someone else has used the program previously. Close all the open branches in the left pane to get the view shown in Figure 12.1.)
