Selecting and masking, two of Photoshop’s most important features, lay the foundation for many if not most of the adjustments you make to images. The uses for masks are endless, and although Photoshop offers many different types of masks and ways to create them, their purpose and behavior are the same: masks control which areas of an image or layer are edited or unaffected, or what areas are hidden or revealed. For example, a Quick Mask could be used to make a selection to lighten or darken a specifi c area of an image, while a Layer Mask might be used to hide or display information on a layer, such as another image, a pattern, a color, an adjustment, type, a set of images, or a combination of all of them. And because no two images are alike, Photoshop provides several distinct types of masks and over a dozen selection tools to create masks, providing tremendous fl exibility and precise control.

Histogram: Describes the breakdown of pixel values in an image. Can also be used to see the breakdown of pixel values by channels. Luminosity, which shows the brightness value, is generally the most helpful. However, an examination of the color channels can help you determine what color corrections are needed.
Equalize: Tries to balance out the brightness values of your image. This works well for some images.

In the real world, filters are placed in front of a camera lens to create differences in effects and textures. There are physical limitations with how filters are used and the range of effects they create. With a photo collage that’s preplanned, you have the ability to set things up and shoot the images so that your Photoshop collage work will be easier than if you were starting with photos that were taken at different times or different locations. In the example for this tutorial, we’ll be using three photos of a stove taken using a tripod so that they all align perfectly. The fi rst shot is a clock on top of the burner. Next, the clock was removed and the burner was turned on to record it red hot. Finally, the lights in the kitchen were turned off to capture the intense heat glow from the burner. Along the way we’ll cover several useful masking and collage techniques, as well as explore some methods for adding burn damage and creating smoke.

In addition to the many filters included with Adobe Photoshop, you can create your own filters using the Filter Factory. You determine how you want the filter to affect the channels (red, green, blue, and alpha) of each pixel in the image by specifying arithmetic expressions. Unlike some Adobe Photoshop plug-in filters, you can use the filters you create with the Filter Factory on both 68K and Power Macintoshes. The Filter Factory can only be used on RGB images.
