Five years ago we sold our darkroom equipment and moved our image editing to the computer. The image editing software we chose was Adobe Photoshop. It took us about a year to be able to make images from the computer that were as good as ones we had made in our wet darkroom. Today we are making images that we could not even have dreamed of making before. Since then our expertise in Photoshop has increased many times over, but our basic workfl ow has remained the same. Removing an object from it’s background to place it within another image, or to give it a new background can be done various ways in Photoshop . The method that gives the best (cleanest) results is to use the pen tool to create a ‘work path’ around the object and then copy it to a new file. (This will be tutorial #3 in this series-this is also the method I’ve come to use most.) Another method uses the “extract filter” - this works pretty well for simple objects, but leaves you with a little more roughness around the edges. Those can easily be smoothed out using the eraser tool once it’s copied to a new background. (This will be tutorial #2 in this series)

1. What is the Patch Tool
1.) The Patch tool lets you repair a selected area with pixels from another area or a pattern.
2.) Like the Healing Brush tool, the Patch tool matches the texture, luminosity, and color of the sampled pixels to the source pixels.
3.) When repairing with pixels from the image, select a small area to produce the best result.
